Why October Is One of the Best Months to Visit Chianti

There’s a particular kind of light that settles over the Chianti hills in October – softer, lower, catching the last green in the vineyards before they turn gold and copper. The heat of the summer months has gone. So have most of the crowds. What’s left is the Tuscany that drew us here in the first place: quiet mornings on the terrace, long lunches that no one is in a hurry to finish, and a view of Siena’s skyline that you can actually sit with, undisturbed.
If you’ve been putting off a trip to Chianti until “the right moment,” this might be it.

An escape from northern Europe’s grey season
For guests coming from the Central or Northern Europe, October marks the point where home turns damp, dark, and slow – while Chianti holds onto warmth well into the month. Daytime temperatures typically sit in the high teens to low twenties (Celsius), the roads are far emptier than in peak summer, and there’s none of the August queuing for a table or a parking spot in Siena. It’s the season for travelers who’d rather trade the first grey Monday of autumn for one more month of golden light.

A hilltop made for slow work, not just slow travel
October is also, quietly, one of our favourite months for guests who bring their laptops. With fast internet connectivity across the property, a desk with a view is not a compromise here – it’s the whole point. Answer your morning emails on the terrace, take a call with the valley behind you, and close the laptop in time for an aperitivo before the light goes. No commute, no open-plan office noise – just the sound of wind in the olive trees and, occasionally, a distant church bell from Gaiole.

A front-row seat to L’Eroica
If your visit lines up with the first weekend of October, you’ll also catch L’Eroica, the vintage cycling gathering that takes over Gaiole in Chianti on the first days of October. Thousands of riders on pre-1987 bicycles, wool jerseys, and steel frames wind through the same white gravel roads that surround Podere L’Aquila – it’s one of the most photogenic weekends the region has to offer, whether you ride or simply watch from a café in the village.

A quieter chapter, starting mid-October
From 12 October 2026, right after L’Eroica, Podere L’Aquila settles into its own quieter autumn rhythm. Two of our apartments, Alloro and Pino, remain open in the upper house, along with the upper pool – the part of the property with the most private, uninterrupted views over the valley. Meals move into the upper house’s own dining room, a smaller and more intimate space than our restaurant, but no less attentive: the same seasonal, local menu, just served closer to the fire.
It’s less “hotel” and more “guesthouse” for these weeks – which, for the right guest, is exactly the appeal. Fewer people on the property, more attention on each table, and a stillness that’s hard to find in Chianti any other time of year.

Worth knowing before you book
Full property, restaurant and both pools: available through 11 October.
From 12 October onward: Alloro and Pino, upper pool, and meals served in the upper house dining room.
Bring layers: evenings cool down quickly once the sun drops behind the hills.
Chianti in October doesn’t ask you to do anything. No festival schedule to keep up with, no beach umbrella to fight for. Just hills, wine, and time — which, this time of year, moves a little slower than usual.
